Trailhead is a gravel cut located just above the cattle-guard on Arawana Forest Service Road (FSR). Park in the "pit" of
the cut. At the southeast edge of the gravel cut, a logging road heads east, follow it up a sharp but short incline where
it breaks out into a meadow. The main trail exits the clearing at the southeast corner. Follow it.
What to look for
The Fairy Slipper in May
Other wildflowers of the Lodgepole pine forest
Ferns on the forest floor at Arawana Creek headwaters
The swamp
Riparian growth at mid-elevation
Vistas on the way down
The trail continues to climb more-or-less due east until it dead-ends on Arawana FSR just to the south of stock watering
troughs. The forest floor just below the Arawana FSR is a reliable place to find the delicate forest orchid called Fairy
Slipper or Lady Slipper due of its unique shape. Turn South and follow Arawana FSR to its junction with Mt. Randolph
FSR (turn east,) which you follow south a few kilometers, watching for a road exiting on your right where a small stream is
crossed. The riparian vegetation, especially the large and vigorous poplars and older growth pine and fir trees, will alert
you to the creek. This is the headwaters of Arawana Creek. Take the road and follow west through the swamp until you reach
Blackwell’s Lagoon. Hike up above the pond on the west side, looking for a double-track headed west. Exit the pond area
via this track, turning northwest at the dead-end junction onto Reservoir Route. 2.5 km. on this double-track returns you
to the trailhead.
