What to look for
Riparian vegetation
Wildflowers, especially in the Garden of Eden
Pine Drops (Indian Pipe, a saphrophyte) near the creek crossing
A waterfall
A cool spot on hot days
changes to vegetation with elevation
Trailhead is KVR at Turnbull Creek culvert. Access is along the KVR from Arawana FSR, or by KVR from barricade at Sutherland
Road. Parking is poor right in this area (a fill over the creek) so some creativity and a bit of a walk are required! There
is a clear path descending the fill, an easily operated man-gate, and a steep climb up the bank. Note the gravel pit to your
left. The double track you are on turns south to traverse the hillside before turning east. Before the rough up-hill in front
of you, note a trail crossing. Turn south on this trail, and find yourself on the rim of a gully. A trail descends to the
creek, but you want to stay on the rim trail where a brief climb puts you in a riparian glade beside rushing Turnbull Creek.
(A Garden of Eden of sorts!) Following the track through trees brings you to the gas pipeline, where you can make a choice
to hike the creek, or follow a sweeping double track that winds through open forest to arrive at the Main Crossing
about a kilometer or so up-stream. (On a hot day, stay by the creek: cyclists need to take the double-track, even if it’s
hot!)
The trail through open forest is found by climbing the south hill from the Creek, and taking the double track that exits
east at the crest of the hill. The creek trail is right in front of you, so just lower the head and have at it! Follow the
creek up until you hear the water rushing at the cataract or waterfall. A short side-trail takes you to a fantastic outlook
about two-thirds of the way up the falls. Be prepared to fight the urge to sit and enjoy. During spring freshet, this is huge,
while in mid-winter there is an ice fall. A short continuation up brings you to the double-track and a ford of the creek.
Cyclists have put in a pole bridge, which you may wish to navigate entirely at risk of limb! In any event, cross the creek
and in a few meters find a down trail that skirts along the creek. There are rock gardens, so watch your step.
(Some may wish to re-cross the Creek and follow the winding double-track down because it is much safer.) Descend until you
spot the gas pipeline, then scramble down to the Creek again. Cross the creek and pick up the double-track on your right or
west side, soon turning off it to move nearer the creek. A search will turn up a trail along the creek. Follow it and make
your way back to the KVR and trailhead, or exit as you entered.
